Chinampa Aquaculture Island Water Gardens
Ever since I learned of the majestic technique of island gardening, originally known in ancient Mexico as Chinampas, I've adapted it to all scales. Here are several different projects that exemplify the concepts of "fertigation" (irrigating with fertile water) and "sub-irrigation" (irrigation with water from below the surface of the soil). From clay pots in IBC totes and pond liners, to bamboo baskets, to burlap bags, to seedling pots, this method guarantees plants always have access to adequate water, and they have the option to grow roots as shallow or deep into the growing medium as they prefer. The productivity of such systems is unmatched by any other method. Island gardening is humanities best invention!
