Community Garden Volunteering Projects

Early in my urban permaculture journey, I help form a collective that organized garden parties every week over the course of several years. We'd either work on a front or back yard project within out community, or volunteer at local community gardens. This one in East Los Angeles had some of the most amazing stone and mosaic art work. It was one of the best examples of how folks can work together and apply their talents. Horticulture enthusiasts can run the ecological aspects, artists can share their gifts, performers and entertainers can book events and draw folks in. They also this great solar powered system and nursery/green house. Ideally such a combination of elements in every park, and perhaps even every city and surburban block.
