Cutting a Line Through Circling Root Binding from Pot

I was taught the importance of "scoring" root bound nursery plants in pots before planting. It may seem cruel, however it's the best thing you can do to help the plant get a good start in the ground. Either by cutting lines, or by more gently pulling the roots apart by hand, this prevents the roots from growing in a circle and promotes outward growth into the native soil.
