Windshield Sun Drying Mint Herbs in Stainless Steel Tray

After many years of being a vehicle dwelling, house-less digital nomad, I'd found all kinds of ways to innovate and adapt permaculture and homesteading techniques to the mobile lifestyle. It's very intuitive that the interiors of vehicles make great green houses and herb/fruit drying systems. The well enclosed, practically moisture and pest proof design is ideal for horticultural applications.

I intuited that it would be a good use of space to make a micro climate within the truck cab to dry herbs in the windshield as it faced the suns arc across the sky. I propped the stainless steel tray up against the windshield with a book, and the it worked like a charm to dry my last harvest of herbs from my previous garden at another location.

Food preservation by sun drying is a very rewarding practice, with many angles of attack and many issues that have to be addressed to ensure best results. The game gets really interesting when working with the more dangerous foods like meats, and watery fruits and vegetables that take longer to fully dry and also produce moisture which must be fanned away to prevent mold.

Kitchen garden herbs like mint are the easiest to dry, with the least issues of concern.
