This technique is quite charming, you'd be surprised how many different types of seed pits, tubers, and other types of roots such as ginger do well with it. I've had great success getting other wise hard to establish plants to get a good start this way. The tooth picks are strong enough yet do little damage to the plant. They're able to stay hydrated constantly if you're mindful about the water level, and they're a nice little educational science experiment.
