It's demoralizing when you put so much effort into giving trees the best chance at life and they get eaten alive at the base by critters. You can't blame them, and I'm against going to war with them with medieval traps and chemicals. The best you can do is discourage them or make it more difficult for them to damage plantings. This simple technique of wrapping a circle of hardware cloth is sometimes all you need. It's just something to never forget about. I've seen trees grow right into and through metal wires that were forgotten about.
