Large Black Body Orange Winged Desert Flying Insect
This was probably the most astonishing flying insects I'd ever seen in real life. It appeared to be a cross between a giant wasp, a butterfly, a dragonfly and a gremlin from the horror movie. It was about half the size of my hand, and was very intimidating. I always wear eye protection when outside day or night. I figure I can self-treat most potentially injuries caused by attacks from flying insects, as long as they can't get to my eyes. I even have a pair of industrial googles within or near reach so if I have to go into a very defensive mode, I can be assured they won't be able to get near my eyes. I've also developed a strategy of sewing the bottoms of my shorts tight to the skin, and of course, tucking in shirts. Luckily this unidentified flying insect didn't bother me and went about it's way. I was lucky also to be quick to the draw with the camera to get some footage of it when it visited. I've only seen it once but hope it comes back around some day.
