Level Wood Core Hugelkultur

Wood core garden beds, traditionally called hugelkultur by the European originators of the practice, can be adapted to various scales. Sometimes they are mounded up several feet high, sometimes they're buried beneath the surface, sometimes they're sunken in below the surface. Here are a few images of the process of digging a pit, filling with trimmed branches from the maintenance of the site, then burying the branches until the soil is back to it's normal level. This provides slowing decaying nutrient and moisture sponge that can help buffer drought, reduce the need for irrigation, and enhance the productivity of plantings.
