Two Wild Desert Lizards Climb Rocks to Elevated Position for Tactical Advantage Over Insect Prey
Lizards Hunting On Garden Door Rocks And Foraging Pumpkin Leaves
Small whitish desert lizards are prolific out here. I see them hunting all the time. One of their favorite places around the base camp is the large rocks I place against my garden dome door to keep it secure from the smallest critters. The rocks give the lizards an elevated position to scan the ground for prey insects. They'll stay still, perched on the rocks for long periods then suddenly pounce to attack their prey.
When I had pumpkins growing, one of them was very persistent in it's efforts to breach the hardware cloth security perimeter of the dome. It found a place to slide in after many failed attempts and much recon. It proceeded to get a good meal of pumpkin leaves. I let it enjoy it's score, and waited til it was full and worked its way out before sealing the opening in the mesh. It earned its meal by showing me a weakness in my security measures.
