Possibly Desert Recluse Spiders
It turns out, after I'd been very unconcerned over several years about seeing groups of light brown, long legged spiders hanging out together in the shade and darkness of cardboard boxes, I'd do better to be a bit more concerned. After researching their characteristics I discovered that I wasn't safe to assume they weren't closely related to the less likely to be in the desert spiders called brown recluse. It turns out, the so-called "desert recluse", which look similar and are also very reclusive, are likely to be the same spiders that I've seen 10s if not 100s of all throughout my stored materials. Luckily for me, their reclusive nature has meant that when I have moved objects they've been in or around, they scurry away to find a place to hide again. So far I've never been bit, but if my identification is correct, they are desert recluse spiders and bite from them could cause necrosis or a killing of the surrounding skin.
It may not likely be deadly in and of itself but secondary infections are a main concern. Now that I have a better sense of the possibility of their dangers, I've been re-organizing materials storage and providing less habitat for them close to my dwelling and working areas. I don't mind them, I'm honored to live near them, and it's charming that they have a natural inclination to congregate in groups around materials such as cardboard that remind of their preferred rotting wood and bark habitat. However, for my safety and theirs, it's best I rethink the idea of storing items in cardboard boxes under vehicles, and I use even more caution with moving things like shade cloth and tarps where they also tend to congregate underneath.
