Using a Backing Object To Prevent Clothing Sewing Accidents

It's very helpful and wise to put some kind of backing in between layers of clothing when doing any kind of sewing project, whether it be sewing on ornamental patches, or patches to cover holes, or any other kind of clothes mending with a needle and thread. Without using a backing object, more often than not you'll end up sewing together parts of the clothing you didn't intend to. For example you end up sewing a pocket closed, or the front of a shirt to the back. By the time you noticed you've made such a mistake, you have to cut the thread, pull it out back to the point of the mistake, secure that section and start a new section. It's no fun and totally avoidable if you place a backing in place first. You still have to reposition it as you move along as it will tend to move around.
