It's always a bad experience with petroleum based lining or coating starts to peel, melt, degrade, and turn sticky. This happens on steering wheels, tool handles, you name it. I've stocked up on jute rope and have gotten in the habit of wrapping it around such handles to prevent their degradation in the desert sun.
